I aptaecirpe this reporting, Jeff, but I think your description of the print product is a little misleading – I don’t know of any newspaper where print has yet become a legacy operation in the sense that needs to be supported by the web. If that were the case, it’d be easy for newspapers to drop print.It’s the other way around — what’s scarce are business models that *don’t* require a print product to subsidize the sustainable production of community news.Even in the medium to long run, it’s not the print that’s inherently unsustainable — it’s the sort of close, broad, daily reporting that works well in a mass-produced print product. That’s what young and middle-aged people aren’t willing to pay for any more (either with their money or their eyeballs).
