Gearing Up For Lights on Afterschool 2010! Children, families, educators, community leaders, policy makers, celebrities and others across the country are making plans to gather in schools, community centers, parks, malls, state capitols and elsewhere on October 21 for the 11th annual Lights on Afterschool. The only nationwide rally for after school programs is organized by the Afterschool Alliance. It is expected to include some 7,500 events across the United States and at U.S. military bases worldwide this year.
The Magnolia and Capitol Units will be joining together to host a Lights on Afterschool Rally. Members from both clubs will gather at the Capitol Unit Boys and Girls Club to partake in the festivities. The event will begin with a prayer led by Bishop Isaiah Williams of the Potters House fellowship Baptist Church, and the releasing of red, white ¸and blue balloons by Commander Jeremiah Jones of the Jackson Police Department. Members will be encouraged through Motivational and Inspirational speeches given by Mayor Harvey Johnson and District Attorney Robert Schuler Smith. Members and visitors will also enjoy praise dancing and musical entertainment performed by members of both clubs.
Magnolia Boys & Girls Club held a kick ball tournament for club members and youth in the community on Saturday October 2, 2010.
Club members and youth throughout the community enjoyed a day filled with kickball, food, and prizes.
On Friday September 24, 2010 youth around the country celebrated Nickelodeon’s World Wide Day of Play. This day encourages youth to be physically active through the engagement of sports and other recreational activities.
